Managing a Miscarriage

On processing Pregnancy Loss

It is possible to move through this often devastating or even traumatizing process with grace and reverence.

Honor all emotions & allow yourself to slowly process everything.

  1. Take at least a few days off work. And / or have someone help watch your other children. You deserve to be able to tend to yourself & this process often requires time to enter deep introspection. You are likely experiencing the birthing portal in this process. Calling in your community can help immensely. 

  2. Cultivate peace and joy where you can. Get comfort foods, talk to loved ones, create (write, draw, paint, dance) when you are ready. This helps you move the emotional energies of a miscarriage out of your body. 

  3. Take your time. With everything. You deserve to process exactly as needed. Avoid coping mechanisms that can cause more stress to your body & prevent the healing process from moving as it should. Such as: alcohol, smoking and drugs or heavy exercise. Rest as much as possible during the process of pregnancy loss. 

  4. Seek external support. This can look different for each person. Remember you can seek the assistance of a medical professional, therapist, or other specialists in miscarriages and pregnancy loss. 

  5. Pamper yourself. Get your hair or nails done, get a massage, etc. Allow yourself to be treated to luxury in whatever way feels good & can be done in the moment. You deserve some extra pampering! 

  6. Try and relax. Avoid the mental spirals of despair, while allowing yourself to properly process everything that comes up during this difficult time. Move forward with no shame or guilt. These things often happen due to something entirely out of our control. 

  7. Seek to remember your pregnancy in a way that feels good to you.

  8. Seek to nourish your body. Take vitamins, such as a prenatal or multi-vitamin, iron, etc. and try to eat foods high in Iron and Vitamin C to help your body replenish itself.

Practices I personally recommend: 

- Meditation with your Higher Self and/or Spirit Baby (as you are ready and if you desire)

- Journal your emotions or talk to a trusted loved one

- light a candle in reverence. May be used in combination with an altar or flowers / herbs or certain colors. Do whatever you feel called toward in this practice. 

- Get a plant or tree to care for or as a physical nod toward your baby(s). 

- Start a creative project. Let whatever your desire to flow simply come out and be. 

- Intentional quiet time where you connect to your body and send love, acceptance and peace to yourself. Connecting to your womb and being in a state of gratefulness and honoring all that your womb has done and will do for you. 

- Do small things daily to help you feel better. Get ready for your day, take an ‘everything’ shower. Watch a comfort movie and eat foods you love. Visit a place you hold dear to your heart. Whatever feels like a YES in your body & also honors wherever you are physically, mentally & emotionally in this process. 

     Remember you are loved, honored and that even in times of great darkness, light can and will reappear. And if you are simply not there yet, that too is perfectly valid. There is this beautiful concept called Microchimerism, which is loosely defined as the presence of your baby(s) cells continuing to exist within your body after pregnancy. During pregnancy, the cells of mother and baby are in communication and often exchanging information with one another daily. After each pregnancy, these cells remain within the Mother - often for decades - and also continue to integrate with each subsequent pregnancy. Your baby(s) are literally still with you - likely physically in several places - most notably within the heart.
